Some of the tightly kept secrets of sci-fi sequel “Star Trek Into Darkness” — including the name of the character played by Alice Eve — are starting to leak out as the film ramps up its publicity in advance of next year’s May 17 release date.
First, we discovered that Benedict Cumberbatch’s mysterious villain is apparently named “John Harrison” — a name that means nothing to the “Trek” faithful.
Now, Coming Soon is reporting that Eve’s character is called Carol Marcus, and that’s a name that means a lot. In “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan,” Marcus was a scientist and one of Captain Kirk’s lovers. Not only that, but she gave birth to his son, David. Actress Bibi Besch played the role in “Khan.”
As those who saw director J.J. Abrams’ 2009 reboot “Star Trek” know, the new series of films is unfolding in an alternate timeline from the original series. So Marcus may or may not have a similar relationship with Kirk (played by Chris Pine) in “Into Darkness,” but the revelation seems to contradict early reports that Eve would be playing a newly created character.
Audiences eager for their first look at “Into Darkness” won’t have to wait long. A nine-minute sneak peek premieres this weekend with select IMAX engagements of Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.”
