Hey world, don’t mess with Stephen Colbert. President of MTV Networks Music & Logo Group Van Toffler found that lesson out the hard way when he yanked Daft Punk from the band’s scheduled “The Colbert Report” appearance because they are also slated to give a surprise MTV Video Music Awards performance later this month.
Well, it’s definitely not a surprise anymore. Colbert had no problem spoiling the news while sharing his wrath about the situation with fans. “If Daft Punk were on my show, people wouldn’t tune into see them on the VMAs almost a month from now. That’s how music works,” he jokes. “You love a band, you see them once, then never want to see them again. That’s why after the Beatles went on Ed Sullivan, they dropped off the face of the Earth. I think Ringo ended up working as a train conductor.”
Fortunately Colbert had something even better up his sleeve to make up for the fact he didn’t have Daft Punk to perform for his StePhest Colbchella festival. He put together a celebrity-filled cover of their song “Get Lucky” that can be enjoyed in all its wonder below. Let’s face it, this probably is better than a Daft Punk performance anyway.
