Remember when Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) were regularly hooking up with waitresses and hippies and werewolves and doctors and angels? Well, we’re nearly halfway through this season of “Supernatural,” folks… and nobody is getting any love. (Except Bobby. We’re guessing he’s got some good times in his future.)
Aside from depriving fans of the shirtless scenes we’re always clamoring for, the lack of sex on the show reveals a lot about the Winchesters’ current states of mind. This season, writers have made a point to acknowledge that Sam and especially Dean just aren’t in the mood these days.
In last week’s episode, Sam got married to his biggest fan while under
the spell of a demon’s love potion… but (lucky for him!) they never
“consummated” the unholy matrimony. The week before, Dean saved the
damsel in distress, and despite a major
psychic connection between them, he drove away without so much as a kiss goodbye. Season 1 Dean would’ve been appalled.
As far as we’ve seen, Dean hasn’t slept with anyone since his romance
with Lisa crashed and burned last year. When recently given the opportunity to hook up with a bartender who seemed to be just his type, Dean lost his cool. We found him pacing outside the bar, talking to himself: “It’s been a while, but you owe yourself. It’s nothing but a ground ball. You’ve just got to put your mitt down. You are Dean Winchester. This is what you do.”
His baseball metaphors were rather unconvincing, and conveniently, he was abducted by a vengeful ancient Egyptian God before he could step up to the plate.
Given Sam’s track record with women, it’s probably a good thing that he’s keeping to himself — not to mention, when his soul was MIA last year, he had enough “athletic” encounters with women to last a lifetime. That’s got to make a guy feel a little icky, to put it eloquently.
But what does it all mean? Probably not that they’ve suddenly decided to save themselves for the one.
More or less, it’s a glaring neon sign that all is not well in Winchester world. Still, in the final moments of last week’s episode, we got the impression that things are stabilizing. Sam has a tenuous grip on his fractured, freaked-out mental state and has dedicated himself to a more healthy lifestyle. After coming clean about Amy, Dean’s guilty conscience is eased, and he’s even been (in a way) let off the hook from the take-care-of-Sam duty to which he’s dedicated thirty-ish years.
Things may be looking up, though. TVLine reports that the SPN bosses are currently casting one very lucky lady who has a “sizzling” — yes, sizzling — one-night-stand with one of the bros. Lydia, who is described as a “striking” woman in her late 20s, presumably has a good time — “But afterwards, she’s cold
and indifferent — could that be because she’s part of a strange cult?”
Of course. Of course, she’s part of a cult.
Get your guesses in now, “Supernatural” fans. Which Winchester will be the first to break the dry spell?
