The Beauty tribe lost its first castaway on “Survivor: Cagayan” when Brice Johnston was voted out, much to many fans’ dismay. He tells Zap2it he wasn’t surprised to be voted off because he knew his tribemates saw him as a threat.
Zap2it: Are you glad you went on “Survivor,” even if you got eliminated so early?
Brice Johnston: Absolutely. “Survivor” to me is one of the best shows out there. If I had to be eliminated early, I couldn’t have picked a better situation. They eliminated me because I was beautiful, but most importantly they knew I was a threat and a force to be reckoned with. To me, it’s the biggest compliment in the world. And at least I went down fighting.
What did you think of the beauty/brains/brawn twist?
I thought it was so interesting. Being a fan of the show, I always love when they break the tribes up into three tribes because no one’s safe. No one can hide behind their alliances, everybody has to come out fighting. I loved the twist. I was definitely excited to be on the Beauty tribe.
Did you find it hard to fit in on your tribe?
I felt like I was ostracized from day one. I felt like the tribe looked at me as just this gay, black guy from Philly and were like, “What is he gonna do?” They had their country alliance, the men and those two women wanted to stick together, and I stood out. I think what surprised them was how vocal and social I was, how active I was in the challenges, how much I contributed around camp life, and I think that made it even worse for them. They’re like, “Oh my gosh, he’s actually great, he actually embodies everything you want in a ‘Survivor’ player.” So it made them nervous. When they’re not used to something different, it makes them nervous.
When you left the game, who did you think was in the best position?
Definitely somebody from the Brawn tribe. They’ve got the numbers, they haven’t lost a challenge yet. I definitely knew the Brawn tribe was sitting pretty nicely. They seem to tbe working really well together.
Did anything surprise you when you watched the show on TV?
Nothing super surprising. But knowing that the Brains tribe was a wreck — I knew that something was going on, I just didn’t know to that extent. It was very hilarious watching the Brains the first two episodes. … They were a little bit of a hot mess there. I love Garrett, but I think he got too comfortable. And I love J’Tia, dumping the rice in the fire. I think it made her great to watch. Crazy to play “Survivor” with, but great to watch.
Would you go back on “Survivor” if they asked you?
Absolutely. I don’t think the fans got enough of Brice. I think the fans of ‘Survivor’ are very sad that all of my Brice-isms left so early. And the fact that I was a great player, I wasn’t like a Colton that was a crybaby. I would definitely play again.
“Survivor: Cagayan” airs Wednesdays sat 8 p.m. ET/PT on CBS.
