At Sunday’s (July 22) Teen Choice Awards, Justin Bieber protg Carly Rae Jepsen sang her summer anthem “Call Me Maybe” again. Which is fine because the song is fun and infectious and had the star-studded crowd singing in their seats, though fans watching at home had a more mixed reaction (at least per Twitter).
“Carly Rae is a boring performer. I’d be so hype performing Call Me Maybe,” writes one.
“CARLY RAE JESPAN [sic] IS PERFORMING CALL ME MAYBE IM GOING TO PUT MY TV ON MUTE THEN LOL,” writes another in dreaded all caps.
“if i was carly rae jepsen and i had to sing call me maybe for the 282793 millionth time in front of all those celebrities i’d want to cry,” adds a more sympathetic tweeter.
Several also point out that Jepsen, 26, isn’t really a “teen sensation” though she was introduced as one. (Technically, she can still be one, though, if she’s a sensation for teens, right?)
Jepsen closed out the show on an energetic note and her performance was a far cry from the anemic show she gave at May’s Billboard Awards, just a few short months ago, where her dancing was mostly just a little hopping in place and her use of the stage was limited to pacing back and forth in front of her band. On Sunday, Jepsen was a ball of energy in short shorts who ping-ponged all over the stage, high-fiving fans and even jumping down into the audience to give U.K. imports Sophia Grace and Rosie a chance to share the mic.
