If the 2012 Teen Choice Awards taught us anything, it’s that live TV is not easy.
Hosts Demi Lovato and Kevin McHale looked a little uncomfortable in the early going of Sunday’s (July 22) show as a couple of pre-taped bits didn’t go over as expected and the jokes written for them didn’t seem to land. McHale gamely tried to save an early piece featuring a clip of his boy band NLT by singing a bit of One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful” — but he had to do it a capella, as music he was apparently expecting didn’t kick in.
The hosts’ scripted banter about growing up “in the same mall” in Dallas also went nowhere, as did a bit with them sharing childhood photos.
They weren’t alone, either: “New Girl” star Zooey Deschanel and Selena Gomez tried some comedy as they presented an award, and it fell flat. So did a taped piece from Lovato’s fellow “X Factor” judge Simon Cowell. Later, “Glee” star Lea Michele and “Teen Wolf’s” Tyler Posey tried to amp up the crowd with a vampires-vs.-werewolves applause poll, but not everyone played along. The audience seemed to be saying, just get to the awards and performances already.
To their credit, Lovato and McHale got through the bumpy start, and the rest of the show went fairly smoothly. What do you think of the job the hosts did?
