CBS debuted a new cooking competition show called “The American Baking Competition” Wednesday night (May 29). The program features 10 bakers competing in three different bake-offs each week, which proved quite interesting in the first episode, titled “Pies and Tarts.”
The first bake is the Signature Bake, which each week will feature a recipe each baker is very comfortable with. For the pie premiere, we saw everything from apple and sweet potato pies to maple bourbon chocolate pecan pie and chocolate peanut butter bacon pie, the last of which the judges liked in spite of themselves.
The second bake each week is the Technical Bake, which gives all 10 bakers the same recipe, but with key instructions missing. This week they made judge Paul Hollywood’s meat pie, which was challenging because of the hot-water crust that a lot of bakers got too soggy or too thick.
The final bake is the Showstopper Bake, where the bakers really try to dazzle the judges. This week they had to make 36 sweet tartlets in three hours. The tartlets ranged from raspberry/dark chocolate to Italian calabrese.
Adorable southern belle Francine was named the star baker, while Carlo the Italian stallion was sent packing, much to the surprise of Jeremy (and us). But the judges said that while Jeremy needs polish, he has the imagination that Carlo lacks.
Either way, we’re definitely in for “TABC.” The baking, as opposed to “cooking,” adds a unique twist, since cooking is more of a fly-by-night art while baking is a more disciplined science (at least, in our experience. Maybe that’s why we’re more a cook than a baker). But the format of the show and the delicious desserts will have us coming back for seconds.
