The marketing of “The Event” told us a bunch of things that weren’t the Event, and we have it on good authority that what happened at the end of Monday’s (Sept. 20) premiere wasn’t either.
But we suspect that’s going to be the thing people are talking about after they see it.
Specifics and spoilers coming up in 3, 2, 1…
So at the end of the pilot, the jetliner that’s headed straight for the president’s (Blair Underwood) vacation spot, piloted by the missing girl’s (Sarah Roemer) dad (Scott Patterson) and carrying the missing girl’s would-be fiance (Jason Ritter), who’s desperately trying to get his future father-in-law to stop what he’s doing, disappears into thin air right before crashing. At which point Sophia (Laura Innes), the leader of a mysterious group of detainees, turns to the president and says, “I haven’t told you everything.”
Yeah, no kidding.
The premiere raised a whole boatload of questions, including but not limited to where the heck the plane went, just what the deal is with Sophia and her fellow prisoners, why the CIA director (Zeljko Ivanek) is so close-lipped about the detainees and where the heck Leila (Roemer) went when she disappeared from her and Sean’s (Ritter) cruise.
One thing we do know, having talked with both creator Nick Wauters and Ritter recently, is that going forward there will be less jumping around in time; most of future episodes will take place in the present, with some flashbacks to help fill in the backstory. That will probably help focus the storytelling a little, but it will still probably be a while before we find out what the Event is.
For now, though, we’d like to pose a couple of questions to you. Did you see the twist at the end of the episode coming? Does all the mystery make you want to stick around or just roll your eyes? Let us know what you think of the show in the comments.
