Take that, Olivia Pope: While “Scandal” scrambled to hide star Kerry Washington’s pregnancy behind furniture, lamps and purses, “The Fosters” is one-upping the ABC drama with an unlikely prop used to hide star Sherri Saum’s baby bump: a kayak.
Saum’s character is pregnant on the show, too, but in real life Saum was much further along — with twins — than her character’s single baby. “The wardrobe department is still biting their fingernails off trying to figure out how many different purses they can design to hide me behind,” Saum tells Zap2it in an interview just before the May birth of her twin boys.
“I have a scene coming up in Season 2 where I have to use a kayak, a literal kayak behind me. It’s very funny,” she says.
But it wasn’t too big of an ordeal for the “Fosters” crew to conceal Saum’s pregnancy, considering the writers had already written that particular twist for her character.
“When I told Joanna Johnson about my pregnancy she hugged me and she said, ‘Oh, we already wrote it anyway.’ So they’ve actually been working on the storyline to some degree, probably not the degree they thought they have to but it’s already been in the works,” Saum says.
“The Fosters” Season 2 premieres Monday (June 16) at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ABC Family.
