Two major pieces of key art from “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” have premiered online. A new image, which shows Bilbo, Thorin and the rest of the dwarf company being swept downriver away from the dungeons of the Wood-elves, has debuted alongside a brand new poster for the film.
The barrels scene is one of the most iconic in “The Hobbit” novel, and as TheOneRing.net points out, there are some major deviations in this image. For one, the dwarves are supposed to be hidden in the barrels, not sticking half out of them. For another, the dwarves were never attacked during their escape like this image implies. Still, it looks pretty cool.
As for the poster, it’s styled in the same way as “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’s” main poster was, except this time the main art is of Smaug’s eye with Bilbo’s reflection in it. Hopefully we’ll get a better look at the dragon — and get to hear it voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch — in an upcoming trailer.
“The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” is due in theaters on Dec. 13.
