On Friday (March 23), the long-awaited adaptation of the young adult book series “The Hunger Games” kicks off with the first movie in a planned trilogy. Excitement is at a fever pitch and tickets to the movie’s first screenings broke records for advance ticket sales.
But will “The Hunger Games” and its story of a dystopian future where teens battle each other to the death be able to trounce the supernatural film series that paved the way for its existence, “The Twilight Saga?”
BoxOffice.com estimates that “The Hunger Games” opening weekend take is already up to $115 million thanks to that pre-sale.
The first “Twilight” installment raked in $67 million in its first weekend, while the most recent release, “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” logged $138 million in opening weekend sales. 2009’s “New Moon” had the series’ highest opening weekend with $142 million in sales, according to Box Office Mojo. The final “Twilight” movie, “Breaking Dawn – Part 2” debuts in November.
So forget Team Edward vs. Team Jacob and Team Peeta vs. Team Gale. We want to know who you think will win the box office matchup between “Twilight” and “The Hunger Games.”
