]]>Dr. Donda West. Donda, an English professor, died of plastic surgery complications in 2007. The foundation’s inaugural program, “Loop Dreams,” used music education as a means to develop key skills in students and ultimately reduce high school drop out rates in the United States. The New York Times obtained e-mails from former executive director, Joseph Collins, in which he announces that the charity has closed its doors. Collins also reportedly informs associates at other non-profit groups that he is seeking a new job. “I am reaching out to let you know that the Kanye West Foundation (kanyewestfoundation.org) has officially closed it doors after a successful 4+ years of programming and events,” Collins wrote. “It has been an incredible experience working with Kanye and the board to realize his mother’s vision and I am honored to have been given the opportunity to lead the Foundation.” That’s all well and good, but when pressed for a reason behind shut-down no one seems to be talking. Collins refused to comment, merely saying “You’d have to get in touch with Mr. West.” NYT proceeded to contact Kanye’s agency (WME Entertainment), his publicist, a rep for Universal Music (where said publicist works), and the organization’s chairwoman. None of whom responded to messages. So what gives? Kanye is one of the most passionate artists of this generation. We’d really like to see him put some of that fire toward a good cause, rather than close the doors to a charitable organization.
