NBC aired its Maya Rudolph variety special on May 19, and viewers have been waiting to hear if “The Maya Rudolph Show” will return as a series as well.
“It’s still an active creative discussion,” says Paul Telegdy, NBC’s President of Alternative and Late Night Programming, at 2014 summer TV press tour.
He says that NBC and Rudolph are trying to figure out what the show will be, and the balance of how much of the show would be musical comedy versus sketches versus scenes shot in the studio.
“It was a show we’re really proud of because we put it together in a short span of time,” Telegdy says. “We really enjoyed the experience. We see it as an imperfect first episode.”
Chairman Bob Greenblatt adds, “We were very encouraged by the ratings. Clearly it had a great lead in, but as we now do analyze things minute-by-minute, the fact it that it sustained” was very encouraging.
Though there aren’t any key details about when or how another “Maya Rudolph Show” could return, NBC is optimistic. “We’d love to try a new one,” Telegdy says.
