CBS is making big moves in its comedy programming this fall, expanding its Thursday block to two hours. To do so, it’s relying on a handful of big names. Not only did the network place the new Robin Williams vehicle “The Crazy Ones” in the 9 p.m., but it’s hoping Will Arnett‘s latest can bring some fresh eyes to the night as well.
In “The Millers,” from “Raising Hope” creator Greg Garcia, Arnett stars as Nathan Miller, a recently divorced local news reporter whose excitement over his new single life is derailed after his dad Tom (Beau Bridges) leaves his mom Carol (Margo Martindale, “The Americans”), prompting Carol to move in with Nathan.
The preview of the show reveals its very much in line with the multi-camera comedies that, for better or worse, we’ve come to expect from CBS. Fans of the networks lineup will probably eat this up. If you’re not a fan of the typical CBS comedy fare, there might not be much here for you, but the talent in the cast is a saving grace. JB Smoove (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”) co-stars as Nathan’s best friend Ray.
“The Millers” airs Thursdays this fall at 8:30 p.m. on CBS.
