According to Vulture, Gervais filmed a “top-secret cameo” as his British “Office” character, David Brent, that will appear in the show’s Jan. 27 episode. Gervais, of course, created “The Office” with Stephen Merchant, and the two are executive producers of the NBC show.
“Office” executive producer Paul Lieberstein tells the site that Gervais and Steve Carell filmed their scene together in September (after Gervais came to Los Angeles for the Emmys), and that it will appear in the cold opening of the Jan. 27 episode: “It’s a little more than if you blink, you’ll miss it, but if you don’t set your TiVo right, you’ll miss it.” (So, set your DVRs to record a minute or two early that night.)
The scene was such a secret that Lieberstein and others involved didn’t even tell NBC initially, and even in the spoiler age in which we live, word didn’t leak until eight days before the episode airs.
Lieberstein wouldn’t say much about the scene Carell and Gervais have together. “It’s outside of the office, and it’s just the two of them interacting,” he tells Vulture. “It’s just a little nod to Steve and his final year.” He does note, however, that he and his fellow writers did think about the many parallels between Michael Scott and David Brent, and that’s the reason why they decided to film their scene away from Michael’s work.
Amy Ryan and Ricky Gervais in one episode? Our “Office”-loving hearts may just explode.
