Want to relive the moment when Michael Scott met David Brent and “that’s what she said” history was made? You can do so right here and now.
The cold opening to Thursday’s (Jan. 27) episode of “The Office” is below, featuring Michael (Steve Carell) and David (Ricky Gervais) running into one another at an elevator and forming an instant bond over their questionable comedy tastes. Gervais and Carell filmed the bit months ago, but the show managed to keep it a secret until last week.
Gervais, who created and starred in the original “Office” on the BBC, filmed the cameo as a nod to Carell’s final year on the NBC show. As reported when word of the scene leaked last week, Michael and David meet outside of Dunder Mifflin. They exchange views on comedy, and David wins Michael’s heart with a “That’s what she said.” The only mention of Dunder Mifflin comes at the very end.
It’s a nice nod to the show’s roots and to Carell’s tenure, and the show’s writers did a smart thing by containing it to the pre-credits sequence: Gervais and Carell (and the audience) can have their fun without it throwing off the episode as a whole.
