Before the Other Side vanished into oblivion on Thursday (May 15) night’s Season 5 finale of “The Vampire Diaries,” it took with it two series regulars: Ian Somerhalder’s Damon and Kat Graham’s Bonnie. Now, executive producer Julie Plec has already reassured fans that we’ll still see both of them in some capacity when Season 6 premieres this fall, but we don’t know in what capacity, or for how long. So at least fans gained two series regulars in their absence.
Yes, in addition to Matt Davis’ Alaric coming back from the dead and returning as a series regular for Season 6, new fan-favorite character Enzo, played by the charming Michael Malarkey, will be back as well. EW reports that Malarkey has been upped to series regular next season.
“We have not seen the last of the delicious Michael Malarkey. He’s a wonderful addition to the team, and he will be officially a series regular next year,” Plec says. “I sort of feel like in Season 9, if it’s Enzo and Alaric, we just spin them off into their own show. I think life would be pretty good. I anticipate them not liking each other very much.”
So while Damon’s fate is still left up in the air, at least fans will get his two favorite drinking buddies in his stead for the time being, as both came back from the Other Side before it imploded. They’re both vampires — since that’s the state they were in when they died — and it will be incredibly interesting to watch Alaric’s journey as he gets used to being a strange new kind of vampire (remember, Esther made him an Original vampire to hunt her own children). Plus, Enzo’s made it clear that he’s not done with the Mystic Falls crew, since he told Caroline with a smirk, “See you around, gorgeous,” before walking off into the night.
