Oh, this was a tough one. For Christina Aguilera‘s first team battle on Monday’s “The Voice,” she chose Opera singer (and “Glee” Warbler) Chris Mann to go up against the adorable Monique Benabou to sing “Power of Love” by Celine Dion.
“I’m sticking to my classical foundation through the battle round,” Chris said, trusting Christina’s advice from the blind auditions. “I’m not going to ever shrink my voice down again.”
He made Monique a little nervous, because their styles were so different. “Chris has so much experience. I have never been trained, I don’t know how to read music, I’m iffy on my harmonies,” she admitted.
Lionel Richie stopped by to give Chris some advice, particularly about connecting to the emotion of the song, not just the technique. When Jewel came in to help Monique, they went over her game tape from the blinds and dissected the performance to pick up on imperfections.
Ultimately, the choice was Christina’s. “You guys brought your A game today,” she said. “Chris, you came in here and you represented yourself in a different light… and Monique, you definitely stepped up to the plate… you just were an angel on this song.”
Not quite angelic enough, though, because ultimately, Chris took the win. We’re disappointed to see Monique go home. What do you think? Sound off in the comments section.
