On Tuesday’s (May 14) episode of NBC’s “The Voice,” the Top 12 were subjected to America’s votes, and only America’s votes, for the first time in Season 4. Coaches Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Usher and Shakira were forced to sit back and watch helplessly as two artists were given the boot, regardless of which team they were on.
Reaction: These results must be read out of order. There is no way that these two artists were the highest vote earners. No way.
Time for a little music: Blake takes the stage with his team for a performance of Brooks & Dunn’s “Play Something Country,” which was just a scotch too country for my sensibilities. The crowd seemed to enjoy it, even though they were forced to wear those horrific blinking cowboy hats.
Reaction: This saves make much more sense. Simmons is a genuine threat in this competition, with the chops to go all the way, and Hawley makes all the girls (and a good handful of the boy) swoon uncontrollably. It’s logical that he’d be around for a bit longer.
Reaction: Duh. Duh, duh, duh.
Time for a little music: Adam takes the stage with his team for a performance of The Cure’s “Love Song.” There’s a smarmy feel to this in the beginning with them all lounging on those boxes, but they sound absolutely heavenly. I want to live inside this performance.
Reaction: Michelle seemed shocked it was her and not Vedo moving on. I wasn’t. Amber’s a solid choice, but Sasha Allen is still in danger. Not cool.
Did the right people get this boot, “Voice” fans?
– Lest you think that Robin Thicke was dying with the way he was sweating on stage, know that his performance was pre-taped yesterday when the studio was experiencing its major A/C issue.
– All the mentors will be returning next week to reconnect with the artists they worked with, except for Team Shakira mentor Joel Madden who’s busy filming “The Voice Australia” down under. He’ll be replaced by former (and maybe future?) coach Cee Lo Green.
– I will never rid my mind of that image of Zach Swon twisting his face into the Ghostface mask from the “Scream” franchise. Terrifying.
– Everyone in the Top 12 charted on iTunes last night. Good for them.
