Were you one the many people who went back and watched “The Walking Dead” Season 4, episode 15, “Us,” multiple times to try to figure out if the people at Terminus were barbecuing human or animal meat? Well, then Greg Nicotero is proud of his job well done.
Zap2it recently spoke Nicotero while he was promoting the upcoming episode of “From Dusk Till Dawn,” and asked if he was intentionally teasing fans wondering if the Terminus residents are cannibals. “Oh, of course,” he says. “I know what she’s cooking, and people will find out next season what she’s cooking, but yeah, absolutely. I’m really proud of that episode.”
Season 4 was the best season of “The Walking Dead” yet, and Nicotero also thinks it’s the best exhibition of him as a director. “Episode 9 with Rick and Carl and Michonne, the midseason premiere [‘After’], is probably the best episode I’ve ever directed,” he says. “I was really proud to be able to put the show back on the road again.”
Nicotero already knows what episodes he’ll be filming in Season 5, though he’s not ready to reveal them just yet. He does say that between his work on “The Walking Dead” and his work on “From Dusk Till Dawn,” “I feel like I’m having my championship season.”
Also at the top of her game in “The Walking Dead” Season 4 was Melissa McBride, whose amazing turn as Carol Peletier is Emmy-worthy. Nicotero admits that her performance in Season 4’s best episode, “The Grove,” left him in tears.
“I cried when I watched the first cut of that, and I got to the scene with Melissa and I literally paused it and had to call her and say, ‘You f***ing made me cry. I’m speechless,'” he recalls. “And she’s like, ‘Well f***, hang up and watch the rest of it and call me,’ because she was so excited. Then I watched the rest of the episode and I was speechless for like 45 minutes. I couldn’t talk, I was just so moved by her performance and what a fantastic script Scott Gimple wrote. She called me back like three hours later, like ‘Thanks for calling me back,’ and I was like, ‘You don’t understand.’ I couldn’t talk.”
“The Walking Dead” is expected to return to AMC with Season 5 in October 2014.
