Rik Mayall, best known for co-starring in the British comedy of “The Young Ones,” has died at the age of 56.
According to ITV, no details are known about Mayall’s death, although the comedian had suffered a major accident in 1998. He was in a coma for several days after that, although Mayall seemed to recover and had been active in comedy in the years since. His most recent work was in the British series, “Man Down,” in 2013.
In addition to writing and co-starring in “The Young Ones” from 1982 to 1984, Mayall’s career included roles on “Black Adder,” “The New Statesmen,” “Bottom,” “King Arthur’s Disasters” and many other comedies on British television. He also (unfortunately) starred as the title character in 1991’s “Drop Dead Fred.”
Mayall has three children.
