Now the world is ready for a “Veronica Mars” movie, but once upon a time creator Rob Thomas had another goal in mind. He wanted the series to continue in any way the network would allow.
After The CW pulled the plug at the end of Season 3, Thomas sprang into action with a crazy idea: Relaunch the show after a time jump and follow Veronica (Kristen Bell) through a career in the FBI.
In the 12-minute presentation Thomas shot, Veronica has new fiends and foes, and has moved to Los Angeles, leaving the private detective life behind. It was a very different show, but held onto its heart.
Right off the bat, Veronica is busting a pedophile under the direction of her new boss, played by “Justified” star Walton Goggins (then on “The Shield”), and she’s cracking wise the entire time. What’s missing is the old gang, half of what makes “Veronica Mars” so special. There’s no Wallace, Mac, Weevil, Logan or even Piz. What’s worse, her dad isn’t there.
In the long run, it’s probably better that this idea never moved forward. Now fans get the “Veronica Mars” movie they’ve been wanting, along with the characters they love so dearly.
“Veronica Mars” is in theaters Friday (March 14).
