Lee Marshall, the person whose voice would be recognizable to most as Frosted Flakes mascot Tony the Tiger, has died at 64 years old. His son, Jason Marshall, tells the LA Times that he was suffering from esophageal cancer when he passed on April 26 in Santa Monica, Calif.
Marshall first voiced Tony the Tiger in 1999, helping out original voice Thurl Ravenscroft, who was in his 80s at the time and having some difficulties with the dialogue. After Ravenscroft’s death in 2005, Marshall took over the role of Tony full time.
Though he was proud of his role as Tony, Marshall was also very protective. He wouldn’t do the voice in front of children, in an effort to keep the magic of the character alive. Before becoming the famous cartoon tiger, Marshall worked as a radio personality, voiceover artist and professional wrestling ring announcer.
