According to the Los Angeles Times, the shooting incident occurred when the Sheriff’s Department responded to complaints of a man with a knife in the apartment complex. When they arrived, the suspect was said to be holding others hostage inside of an apartment.
“The apartment door suddenly opened and a male victim came rushing out,” the sheriff’s statement said. “He was covered in blood and bleeding profusely from the neck. Simultaneously, victim Winkler ran out of the door, lunging at the back of the fleeing victim. Both ran directly at the deputies.”
Three of the deputies on the scene fired their guns at the two men. The stabbing victim was shot in the leg, while a bullet that hit Winkler killed him.

Inside of the apartment, deputies found the actual stabbing suspect, identified as Alexander McDonald, and another victim. McDonald was arrested, charged with murder, attempted murder and torture, and held on a $4 million bail.
Winkler had been in Los Angeles for only about six months when the shooting occurred. He had recently been hired as a production assistant for Comedy Central’s “Tosh.0.” Friends have said that Winkler only went to the apartment that night because he thought friends were in trouble.
