With no new movies opening wide on New Year’s weekend, several holdovers from last week battled it out at the box office. “True Grit” came out on top.
The Coen brothers western, which finished last week in second place, moved up to first place on Friday (Dec. 31) with an estimated $8.4 million in ticket sales. That’s a significant improvement over the $4.8 million it made on Christmas Eve — and also not unexpected, since New Year’s Eve is typically a much bigger moviegoing night than Christmas Eve.
“True Grit” passed last weekend’s winner, “Little Fockers,” which made an estimated $7.8 million on Friday. It too was up over last Friday’s take ($5.1 million).
In its third weekend, “Tron: Legacy” earned an additional $5.1 million Friday to take third place. “Yogi Bear” ($4.1 million) and “The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader” ($3.5 million) rounded out the top five.
