“American Idol” took a dip Wednesday night, and ABC’s “Modern Family” tied the FOX show among adults 18-49 in their common half-hour. That’s the first time “Modern Family” has equaled “Idol” head-to-head in the overnight ratings (with DVR use added, “Family” has moved ahead of “Idol” a couple times this season).

Also Wednesday, “Arrow” and “Supernatural” were both up a little in viewers for The CW. So was NBC’s “Chicago Fire,” which also led its hour in the 18-49 demographic. “Suburgatory” and “Survivor: Caramoan” were up week to week too.

Despite the “Idol” lows, FOX still led the night with 13.15 million viewers and a 7.9 rating/12 share in households. CBS (9.8 million, 6.3/10) came in second, comfortably ahead of No. 3 ABC (6.9 million, 4.4/7). NBC’s 5.2 million viewers and 3.5/5 were good for fourth. The CW drew 2.75 million viewers and a 1.7/3.

FOX led the 18-49 demo with a 3.8 rating. CBS, 2.4, beat out ABC, 2.2, for second place. NBC averaged 1.6 and The CW 0.9.
