When we first met Tyler Lockwood in Season 1 of “The Vampire Diaries,” there wasn’t a lot of good to be said about him. He was aggressive and quick to anger, he didn’t treat girls nicely, and he had a general disregard for, you know, human decency. After a discovery that he isn’t human, all of that began to change. In tonight’s Season 4 episode “Memorial,” we’ll see just how far Tyler has come since those d-bag days when he makes a sacrifice for his friends and takes a brave stand against Connor, the most ruthless vampire hunter Mystic Falls has seen.
It’s a moment that serves to draw a clear line between Tyler and Klaus. After Klaus shredded Rebekah in the season premiere last week, we saw just how cold he can be — to anyone who isn’t Caroline. This week, we’ll have proof of how much Tyler has grown and how far he’s willing to go to protect not only Caroline, but the rest of his “team” as well.
The episode doesn’t explore Tyler’s feelings about being possessed by Klaus, so we made sure to ask Michael Trevino about the fall-out when Zap2it caught up with him on set at the Lockwood Mansion. “Tyler is in a state of not only shock, but also ‘Okay, if he was in my body, what was he doing in my body? How was he treating Caroline or all the other characters?'” Trevino explains. “He’s mainly finding out, okay, what are the consequences going to be to all the people that didn’t know.”
When we were on set, the cast was shooting Episode 7 — and we can confirm that Klaus was still stubbornly pursuing Caroline… and she may have been starting to crack. Unlike Stefan and Damon, Tyler isn’t too keen on being stuck in a drawn-out love triangle situation. He’s certainly not going to let it go on for three or four seasons. “It’s kind of like, ‘Are we prolonging this, or when is it going to end?’ Now is the time where I can honestly say, this season — and probably the first half of the season — she needs to make a choice, really,” says Trevino. “Is she going to choose Klaus? Is she intrigued by that? Because she definitely is, he can offer a lot.”
And while he may not be regularly trying to murder Caroline’s friends, Tyler isn’t perfect. A teeny tiny bit of his Season 1 self may come to the surface when we learn that he’s been keeping a secret from Caroline… a really gorgeous secret. “So then in comes Hayley, which might stir up the pot a bit between Caroline and Tyler,” he teases, referring to Phoebe Tonkin’s character, a werewolf who helped Tyler break his sire bond to Klaus while Tyler was MIA last season.
“There’s a lot of history there and a strong bond with how far back they go. And, of course, Tyler hasn’t mentioned this to Caroline at all. He forgot to mention that toward the end of Season 3, when he’s back and he broke the sire bond, he forgot to mention that he had the help of this gorgeous female werewolf in Hayley. He must have forgot! He’s an honest guy. He must have just forgot,” he laughs.
We’ll hear more about how Hayley factored in to Tyler’s time in the Appalachian mountains and just how she helped him through that difficult time as the story develops.
Trevino won’t exactly spill as to whether Hayley is a love interest for Tyler, but he does tell us one piece of news that probably won’t thrill the Forwood fans: While Klaus is trying to woo Caroline at the Miss Mystic Falls event, Tyler is preoccupied. Because Hayley is his date. Uh-oh.
Check out our video interview with Trevino below for more on how the sire bond will come into play this season, plus Trevino’s dream of getting behind the camera. Beware, the vid is a little glitchy — we think there was a ghost in the machine — so there are some weird skips, but we didn’t want to deprive you of that face, so we posted it anyway.
“The Vampire Diaries” airs one of its best episodes yet, “Memorial,” Thursday night at 8 p.m. EST. Bring tissues.
