Ratings for the MTV Video Music Awards bounced back considerably after last year’s dismal performance, giving MTV the most-watched show on TV Sunday night (Aug. 25).
The VMAs brought in 10.1 million viewers Sunday, improving by 4 million viewers over last year’s show, which was the least-watched VMA telecast since 2006. It also scored the biggest audience for any show, broadcast or cable, for the night.
The telecast, driven by heavily talked-about performances from Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake and *NSYNC — who briefly reunited during Timberlake’s mini-set — also scored big among MTV’s target audience of teens and young adults. It was the No. 1 entertainment program of the year among people ages 12-34.
The awards also delivered big traffic numbers for MTV’s digital and mobile properties as fans watched more than 15 million video streams — five times more than on the day of the 2012 VMAs.
MTV’s red carpet show also rose significantly, more than doubling last year’s viewership to 4.6 million people.
