Hey, Taylor Swift? Be a better winner.
The superstar won the Video Music Award for best female video Sunday (Aug. 25) for her song “I Knew You Were Trouble,” and she started by thanking the clip’s director, Anthony Mandler, and her co-star, Broadway actor Reeve Carney.
And then, well, she felt the need to bring up the fact that the song is about One Direction’s Harry Styles, who happened to be a few rows in front of her (1D presented an award earlier in the show). “I also want to thank the person who inspired this song, who knows exactly who he is,” Swift said. “Because now I’ve got one of these. Thank you very much!”
(When the song was released, most of the speculation was that the song was about John Mayer. A widely cited Times of London profle of Swift from March, however, claimed she confirmed it was Styles.)
The camera naturally cut to Styles, who maintained a pretty good poker face, chewing his gum and looking toward the roof of the Barclays Center.
