As the 2013 VMAs approach, Zap2it decided to put together a timeline of the most memorable moments in VMA history, starting with the awards show’s debut in 1984. Check it out:

Madonna bumps and grinds on the floor in a wedding dress for “Like A Virgin.” Hey, audience: You think this is controversial? Just wait until you see what she does with this song in two decades.
– Nirvana’s Krist Novoselic hits himself in the face with
his bass during “Lithium” … after the band picks a fight with Guns N’
Roses backstage.
Howard Stern flies over the audience as “Fartman” and blows up part of the podium. Let’s just say it didn’t go over so well.
– Newlyweds Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley share an awkward onstage kiss, causing large parts of the population to recoil simultaneously.
– In a precursor to Kany’e infamous “I’m-a a let you finish …” Beastie Boys’ Adam Yauch — aka MCA —  interrupts R.E.M.’s acceptance speech for Best Direction. “Spike Jonze had one the best videos of all time.”
Courtney Love crashes Madonna’s live interview with MTV News’ Kurt Loder. Equal parts horrified and flustered Madge still handles it with finesse.
Diana Ross fondles Lil Kim‘s breast while presenting Best Hip-Hop Video. But seriously, someone had to do it, right?
Rose McGowan arrives with Marilyn Manson wearing a seriously NSFW sheer mesh and string dress. Jaws were left hanging as wide open as the backside of her frock.
– Rage Against the Machine bassist Tim Commerford thought his band should win Best Rock Video. So when Limp Bizkit takes the Moon Man instead, what else is there to do but climb the scaffolding and refuse to come down?
Britney Spears slinks around carrying a python during “I’m a Slave 4 U,” and her performance becomes an instant VMA iconic moment.
Madonna gives an encore to her infamous 1984 “Like A Virgin” performance, and turns it up a notch by way of a three-way kiss with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.
Britney Spears bombs her VMA comeback with lazy lip-synching to “Gimme More.” She also sports a conspicuous belly pooch that instantaneously turns America into a a nation of haters.
Kanye West interrupts Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech for Best Female Video, inspiring the instant creation of the term, “Kanye’d.” As in, “T-Swift got Kanye’d on live TV.”
– After multiple wardrobe changes, Lady Gaga accepts Video of the Year wearing a dress and shoes made of meat, inspiring a host of Worst Dressed Lists and Halloween costumes.
Beyonce reveals her baby bump, effectively announcing her pregnancy with JayZ after performing “Love on Top.”
