America has a difficult choice to make: Should Jena Irene or Caleb Johnson win “American Idol” Season 13? Judge Harry Connick Jr. thinks both contestants are so good, it will ultimately come down to personal preference.
“I think it is a matter of preference, really,” Connick tells reporters backstage after Tuesday’s (May 20) final performance show. “It is not a matter of who did better, it is who you like more and who is going to vote for their favorite because it is going to be close, I would imagine.”
Connick likens the Top 2 singers to boxers: “It’s like Ali and Frazier,” he says. “Caleb is like Joe Fraizer — he’s a powerful puncher and he came out hitting hard. And Jena is more of a float like a butterfly, sting like a bee Ali. It is like a boxer versus a puncher, and it is so cool that it came down to those two.”
The two-hour results show will be packed with performances from the finalists — Johnson is performing with Kiss and Jena is performing with Paramore, just to name a few — but it’ll also contain a star-studded medley from the three “Idol” judges, Connick, Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban.
“It was a blast,” Connick says of the performance, which was taped after the final performance show. “I know Jen chose ‘True Colors’ but I don’t know who chose Fleetwood Mac. Just being up there with them in a performing context after talking about it for so many months was just great. I think the only frustrating thing was that we didn’t get to do more of it. It was fantastic.”
The “Idol” finale airs at 8 p.m. ET/PT Wedneday on FOX.
