As gay couples celebrate hard-won rights, will “Modern Family” see Mitchell and Cam (Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet) say “I do” when the comedy returns?
“It is a possibility,” Ferguson tells Zap2it. “It’s in the hands of our writers. The show operates in the real world, and we try to stay relevant.”
Ferguson says he had not yet heard if the Supreme Court decision allowing same-sex marriage to resume in California would lead to his character’s nuptials on “Modern Family.” The Emmy-winning show returns in in the fall on ABC; the network hasn’t set a premiere date yet.
Just consider the comic possibilities of Cam planning a wedding.
“I imagine that Cam would take over and it would be this extravagant thing,” Ferguson says.
Ferguson, though, came up with a really fun twist.
“I would love it if Mitchell were a bridezilla for the perfect wedding,” he says.
Ferguson, a tireless campaigner for equal rights, had announced that he and his partner, Justin Mikita, also an actor, are getting married.
“I am going to focus on my real marriage before I start worrying about my fictional one,” Ferguson says. “In the midst of all that, I don’t have time to be a bridezilla, or a groomzilla for that matter.”
What he’s dealing with now are details some get stressed over but which he’s enjoying.
“A lot of the fun parts are the tasting of the food and picking out the flowers,” Ferguson says. “It’s a lot more fun than I thought it would be. There is a lot of stress of getting the ceremony exactly right and there are no rules we have to abide by that we really have to honor.”
