Reports from TMZ tell us that “The X-Factor” has fired Cheryl Cole from the judging panel, which also includes Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, and L.A. Reid. Cole served as a judge on the original version of the show in the UK, where she’s also enjoyed fame as a member of pop group Girls Aloud and as a successful solo artist.
Now, rumors are running rampant that she was booted from the U.S. version of the show because of… her accent? Cole’s strong regional accent is one of many things that makes her stand out from the crowd, and according to some sources, FOX bosses overruled Cowell’s decision out of concern that American audiences wouldn’t be able to understand her.
There are also reports claiming that Cole and Abdul didn’t have chemistry, and the executives considered Abdul to be more valuable to the American version of the franchise. Some sources site Cole’s homesickness and lack of “glamor” as additional reasons.
That’s a whole lot of reasons, but none that seem particularly logical. Watch the video below. Is Cole’s accent too hard for you to understand?
She’s reportedly been replaced by Nicole Scherzinger. The Pussycat Doll was initially hired to host the show, but we may be seeing her behind the judge’s bench this fall.
When we reached out for comment from FOX, the network declined to comment.
