“The X Factor” judges joined the Television Critics Association press tour via satellite from Miami, where they are currently holding “X Factor” boot camp. Simon Cowell was quick to talk about how the new girls are doing as judges.
“Both bring different things,” says Cowell. “I always said the no. 1 person I wanted on one of these shows was Britney because I was fascinated with her as a person, as a pop star … She’s a really, really good judge.”
“Demi is a brat,” Cowell laughs. “There’s something really likable about her as well and I think the show, because it has such a young audience, I think it needed someone younger for the people who watch the show, ’cause I’m in my 30s [laughs] It’s worked brilliantly.”
But he does go on to say that Britney has revealed herself to be a tough judge, in an exchange with Demi.
Simon: “Britney’s quite mean, which you’ll discover.”
Demi: “She’s tough, she’s not mean. She’s a sweetheart who is very honest.”
Simon: “As sweet as a lemon.”
And he adds that the girls are tougher than the guy judges.
“They are harder to please than me or L.A.,” says Cowell. “They’ve definitely got their own opinions, but that’s why we hired them.”
He also adds that all the judges “seem to be getting along really well.”
Turning to the plethora of singing competition shows on the current television landscape, Cowell says there is a pressure to find a big star.
“Yes, I do feel pressure to do it … if I was making a show and I didn’t believe we could find a worldwide selling artist at the end of it, I genuinely wouldn’t bother making this,” says Cowell.
“The X Factor” returns in the fall of 2012 on FOX.
