With a cast as big as that of the upcoming blockbuster “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” it’s understandable that some actors won’t get as much screen time as fans would like. Unfortunately, that also means that some characters might get cut altogether … like Anna Paquin’s Rogue.
Director Bryan Singer reveals to EW that a rescue sequence shot early in the film’s production and featuring Magneto (Ian McKellen), Professor X (Patrick Stewart), Rogue (Paquin), and Iceman (Shawn Ashmore) has been cut from the final version of the film. The worst part is that was Paquin’s only scene in the movie.
“Through the editing process, the sequence became extraneous,” Singer says. “It’s a really good sequence and it will probably end up on the DVD so people can see it. But like many things in the editing process, it was an embarrassment of riches and it was just one of the things that had to go. Unfortunately, it was the one and only sequence Anna Paquin was in — the Rogue character was in. Even though she’s in the materials and part of the process of making the film, she won’t appear in it.”
The Oscar-winning “True Blood” star was on set for only a week of “Days of Future Past” filming, and Singer says the cut has nothing to do with her performance. “She did a fantastic job,” Singer says. “She was awesome in the sequence. She’s a brilliant actress. I would work with her in a heartbeat.”
Paquin already heard the bad news via Singer. “She completely understood,” Singer says. “It’s very disappointing, but she’s very professional and she knows that stuff happens, particularly with material you shoot early on in production. Films evolve.”
