Disney star Zendaya has responded to critics claiming she’s not “black enough” to play Aaliyah in the Lifetime movie based on the late singer’s life and career.
“A lot of people say I’m not black enough. Half black is just enough,” she tells TMZ. “It doesn’t matter what color you are, it’s about how you portray the character. For those that don’t know, Angela Bassett and Tina Turner, they look nothing alike, but she was that character so I think that’s what it’s all about.”
Zendaya has already proven that she’s a big Aaliyah fan — she even dressed up as the singer for a Halloween party in 2013.
While details surrounding the film, tentatively titled “Aaliyah: Princess of R&B,” are still trickling out, executive producer Debra Martin Chase recently told Page Six that the movie will definitely touch upon Aaliyah’s secret teenage marriage to R. Kelly.
“Aaliyah’s personal and professional relationship with R. Kelly will be explored with care in the film as we set out to depict her life with the utmost respect,” she says. “Above all else, it’s our hope to inspire an entirely new generation with her music and larger-than-life talent.”
