Kathryn Bigelow‘s film “Zero Dark Thirty,” which is nominated for five Academy Awards this season, has taken a lot of criticism for its brutal depiction of American agents torturing Al Quaeda members for information about the whereabouts of Osama Bin Laden. Bigelow has suggested that the criticism would be better directed at the government that ordered and sanctioned the torture, as opposed to at the film that depicted it.
But torture isn’t the only thing people are criticizing about the movie. To a lesser degree, the film has also been pegged as Islamophobic because, obviously, its antagonists are Muslim and its protagonists are not. One would assume that eleven years after 9/11, Americans would understand the difference between an extremist terrorist organization and an actual religion practiced by decent people. Unfortunately, one only has to log onto Twitter to see that audiences aren’t that smart.
