'12-12-12': Paul McCartney fronts Nirvana 'reunion' and more highlights from Sandy benefit concert

And reunite they did ... for New York minute.

"The penny finally dropped, and I realized I was in the middle of a Nirvana reunion," said Sir Paul before introducing Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear.

Instead of playing "Smells Like Teen Spirit" or another cover, the fab four played an original song, "Cut Me Some Slack." After that blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment, McCartney's band rejoined him for his final tune, "I've Got a Feeling."

The former Beatle opened his set with "Helter Skelter," and also played "Let Me Roll It," "My Valentine" (with Diana Krall) and "Blackbird."

Alicia Keys closed out the show with "Empire State of Mind."

Other highlights of the night that made musical history:

Bruce Springsteen
opens the show with "Land of Hope and Dreams," "Wrecking Ball," "My City of Ruins" and "Born to Run" with fellow Jersey boy Jon Bon Jovi.

Roger Waters
plays a medley from Pink Floyd's "The Wall" and is joined by Eddie Vedder for "Comfortably Numb."

Adam Sandler and Paul Shaffer tweak the lyrics of "Hallelujah" to "Hallelujah, Sandy screw ya."

Kristen Stewart makes a surprise appearance to introduce Bon Jovi's set, rejoined by Springsteen for "Who Says You Can't Go Home."

Jon Stewart introduces Eric Clapton, whose set includes "Nobody Knows When You're Down and Out," "Got to Get Better in a Little While" and "Crossroads."

Jimmy Fallon introduces The Rolling Stones' short set ("You Got Me Rocking," "Jumpin' Jack Flash").

Stephen Colbert takes a swipe at the headliner: "Paul McCartney, if you want to be as cool as me, cut your hair, lose the accent, grow up."

After Alicia Keys' set, Steve Buscemi introduces The Who, who play "Who Are You," "Bell Boy," "Pinball Wizard," "Baba O'Riley," "Love Reign O'er Me" and "Tea & Theatre."

"The very humble Kanye West," as introduced by Chris Rock, plays "Clique," "Power," "Jesus Walks," "All of the Lights," "Touch the Sky," "Gold Digger," "Good Life" and "Runaway."

Billy Joel's set includes "Miami 2017," "Movin' Out," "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," "New York State of Mind," "River of Dreams," "You May Be Right" and "Only the Good Die Young."

Chris Martin plays "Viva La Vida," before Michael Stipe joins him for a duet of R.E.M.'s "Losing My Religion."
