2012 ESPYs honors Pat Summitt with the Arthur Ashe Courage Award
Summit received the award because in addition to her incredible work as a basketball coach and advancement for women's sports, Summit was diagnosed with early on-set Alzheimer's in 2011, coached one last season with the Tennesse Lady Vols and retired to face her next challenge.
Peyton Manning introduced her video package, recalling how he met her as a freshman at Tennessee. She received a touching tribute, a standing ovation and then had this to say:
"Thank you very much. I've always said you win in life with people and I have been so blessed to have great people in my life. My son Tyler and I appreciate all of your support and during this time, that's the next challenge for me and Tyler. And it is time to fight, as I ask all of you to join me together so we will win. I can tell you tonight I am deeply touched as all of you heard my story, I'm going to keep on keepin' on, I promise you that."
