2012 Preakness Stakes: I'll Have Another edges Bodemeister to keep Triple Crown dreams alive

preakness-ill-have-another--bodemeister.jpgThe 137th running of the Preakness Stakes was held Saturday, May 19 at the Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland, where the Kentucky Derby 1-2 finishers I'll Have Another and Bodemeister faced off. Bodemeister took an early lead out of the starting gate with I'll Have Another hanging back in fourth.

Coming around the final turn, I'll Have Another made a move with a furlong to go - gaining and gaining on Bodemeister. I'll Have Another caught him with just yards to go and won by a neck in a dramatic finish, leaving the door open for a Triple Crown run, as I'll Have Another has now won both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness.

The Triple Crown has not been won since Affirmed won in 1978. Twelve times since 1978 has a horse won the first two legs of the Triple Crown, but not one has managed to pull it out at the Belmont Stakes to finish it off. Will I'll Have Another do it in 2012?

The Belmont Stakes, which is the longest of the three races at 1.5 miles, will be run this year on Saturday, June 9.

In a Preakness sidenote, Creative Cause took third - his jockey, Joel Rosario, dedicated the run to his brother, a Dominican Republic police officer who was killed earlier today.
