2012 Summer Olympics medal count: U.S. leads overall, China still sets gold standard

womens-beach-volleyball-medals.jpgThe United States continues to lead the medal count total, with 81 medals (34 gold, 22 silver and 25 bronze). China has fallen back just a little in the overall tally, with 77 medals total, but still leads the gold medal race, with 36 (22 silver and 19 bronze).

It's a big year for the ladies at the 2012 Summer Olympics. Of the 81 U.S. medals, 47 of them were earned by women, the most of any country, and the U.S. women also lead their gender's gold medal count, with 23 over China's 19.

Hungary, New Zealand, Belarus, Ukraine and Brazil have joined the ranks of double-digit medal winners, and the overall country tally is up to 76 countries that have earned at least one medal at the games.

Only a few days remain in the games -- the closing ceremony is Sunday, Aug. 12. Do you think the U.S. can lead the medal count and the gold column?
