2013 MTV Video Music Awards adds Best Song of the Summer category

robin-thicke-miley-cyrus-song-of-the-summer-mtv-vmas.jpgMTV announced Tuesday (Aug. 13) that the upcoming Video Music Awards will feature a new category -- Best Song of the Summer.

The award show says that the category will celebrate the "songs that defined this summer" and will feature special performances from Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke, with a special appearance by One Direction.

The nominees include Cyrus' "We Can't Stop," Thicke's "Blurred Lines" feat. T.I. and Pharrell, One Direction's "Best Song Ever," "Get Lucky" by Daft Punk feat. Pharrell, "I Need Your Love" by Calvin Harris feat. Ellie Goulding and Selena Gomez's "Come & Get It."

Starting Tuesday, fans can vote via Twitter, Instagram or Vine by using the appropriate hashtag -- #votemiley, #votedaftpunk, #voteselena, #voteonedirection, #votethicke, #votecalvinandellie.

"I am excited to be an inaugural nominee in the 'Song of the Summer' category and to be performing on the VMA's. We have some big surprises planned and I hope everyone will tune in to see it," says Thicke.

Cyrus and Thicke join previously-announced performers Lady Gaga, Kanye West and Katy Perry. Addition performers will be announced at a later day. The 2013 MTV Video Music Awards air live on Sunday, Aug. 25 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.
