'Alphas': Meet the heroes of Syfy's new series

alphas-pilot-320.jpgThe premise of "Alphas" -- seemingly ordinary people with amazing abilities -- isn't exactly a new one. But based on the first full trailer for Syfy's upcoming series, it looks like it could be a pretty fun version of that oft-told tale.

The 90-second spot, which will also play in movie theaters in the coming weeks, introduces the team -- Malik Yoba ("Defying Gravity"), Laura Mennell ("Watchmen"), Warren Christie ("October Road"), Ryan Cartwright ("Bones") and Azita Ghanizada -- and their powers, along with scientist/mentor David Strathairn. It's interspersed with talking-head bits, but it doesn't skimp on the action.

That's a good sign, because while we're certain the show's characters will have to deal with some complications arising from their special skills, "Alphas" doesn't look nearly as mopey as some other shows that have mined the same territory (cough"Heroes"cough).

Zak Penn ("X-Men: The Last Stand") and Michael Karnow created the series, which premieres July 11 on Syfy. Take a look at the trailer:
