Amanda Seyfried admits to drinking before talk shows: 'It really gets me through'

amanda-seyfried-david-letterman-drinks.jpgFor her role as Cosette in "Les Miserables," Amanda Seyfried experienced some clean living -- there was no drinking allowed, because the cast of the film sang live and dehydration was a no-no. But now that filming is over and promotion has begun, Seyfried can drink as much as she wants. She's particularly fond of hitting the bottle before talk show appearances, as she admitted on "The Late Show" with David Letterman this week.

"Yeah, I'm pretty drunk," she joked. "To be honest with you Dave, I've had about three [drinks]."

Hey, we can't fault the woman a little liquid courage. Dave Letterman is a very intimidating man. "I'm a big fan of whiskey," she admits. "I love Middleton. Russel Crowe gave me some Middleton for my birthday; I had some of that before I got here. And then your lovely colleagues had some Jameson waiting for me."

She made it very clear that it wasn't an isolated incident. "I've never done a live television show after noon without some kind of liquid courage," she says. "I understand that I have a problem, maybe, but you know what? It really gets me through. And I really want to enjoy my experience out here, because it's special."

Letterman asked Seyfried, who starred with Lindsay Lohan in "Mean Girls," whether she thought she'd one day end up in a program. "No!" she laughed. She says that if she did a talk show without the booze, she'd probably look the same to the audience. "I think my internal life would be different. You wouldn't notice a difference. I'm super nervous when I'm stage, I have stage fright. I've never done a Broadway show, or a show in general. I think one day I'm going to have to learn to live without it. I'm speaking to a lot of people."

Including Letterman himself, it seemed, as he later took a swig from a bottle of Jameson right there at the desk.
