'American Horror Story: Coven': Kathy Bates is Madame LaLaurie

As we speculated back in March, Zap2it has learned that Kathy Bates is playing Madame LaLaurie, a real-life terror of New Orleans in the first half of the 19th century, leaving New Orleans in 1834. We don't know that the show is necessarily set that far back in history, or if it skips around in time.

But Bates will be bringing Marie Delphine LaLaurie, or Madame LaLaurie, to life for FX. LaLaurie was a New Orleans socialite who was discovered to have tortured and killed dozens of black slaves in her mansion, which is still standing on Royal Street.

We've also learned that Angela Bassett is playing Marie Laveau, a real-life Louisiana Creole woman who lived in New Orleans in the 19th century as well. She was known as a Voodoo priestess.

In casting news, Alexandra Breckenridge, who was a part of AHS Season 1, will return for "Coven," creator Ryan Murphy announced on Twitter. There is no word yet as to her part in the new season.

"American Horror Story" premieres in October on FX. We'll be back later today with more scoop about the upcoming third season.
