Angelina Jolie opens girls school in Afghanistan; launches jewelry line to help fund more schools

angelina-jolie-girls-school-afghanistan.jpg Angelina Jolie has always been one to use her celebrity status to shed light on global problems. She is a United Nations Refugee Agency Goodwill ambassador, and works with UNICEF and the ONE campaign. Jolie routinely travels to strife-filled countries in an effort to draw attention to the crises there.

Now she's getting even more proactive, by opening a school in Afghanistan for young girls.

Jolie picked an area just outside Kabul, a region known for favoring boys' education over girls'. She tells E! News she chose a village with a high refugee population. The school currently has between 200 and 300 girls in attendance.

Her plan for funding is to release the Style of Jolie jewelry collection to retail stores and use 100 percent of the profits to build more schools around the world via Jolie's new foundation, The Education Partnership for Children of Conflict.

"Beyond enjoying the artistic satisfaction of designing these jewels, we are inspired by knowing our work is also serving the mutual goal of providing for children in need," says Jolie. The jewelry goes on sale this first week of April.

Designer Robert Procop adds, "We launched this collaborative collection with the intent that 100 percent of the profits will go to charity. The intention was to create something beautiful but more importantly to provide children an opportunity to have an education."

Many of the pieces in the collection are based on a necklace Angelina designed as a gift for fiance Brad Pitt, a tablet shape. The rest of the collection was carefully designed by Jolie and Procop.

The collection will be exclusively available at Tivol, a jeweler in Kansas City.

"Tivol is a quality company known for carrying high-end jewelry brands that has been family-owned for several generations. The Tivol family has been so gracious and instrumental in planning this event," says Procop.

Jolie adds, "Tivol, with their historic reputation and dedication to family values, is a wonderful retail partner to launch our collection in the U.S."

The jewelry line launches at Tivol at several special events throughout the week.
