'Arrested Development's' Portia de Rossi recalls the first time she stepped out as a lesbian
"Arrested Development" star Portia de Rossi joined the rest of her costars for an episode of "Inside the Actors Studio" and, though much of the episode was spent discussing the show, de Rossi also opened up about her personal life.
De Rossi has spent a decent amount of time in recent weeks discussing coming out as a lesbian, and here she opened up about the first time she publicly made it clear she was a gay woman. She and Ellen DeGeneres began dating in 2005, and it was a somewhat difficult decision for her to take that relationship public.
"I think when I really, truly came out was the Golden Globes when Arrested Development was nominated," de Rossi shares. "Ellen and I had been together for a month and I was very, very nervous going to that because I knew that I was going to meet up with her after the show [and that there would be press]."
She adds, "That was the first time we stepped out together as a couple, but for me, it was the first time I stepped out as a gay woman, really."
During a recent interview on "The Conversation with Amanda De Cadenet," de Rossi admitted, "I just didn't want to be a lesbian. I'd never met one for a start and I just thought they were strange and that they hated men and they were very serious and I had these ridiculous images in my head ... I just kind of thought I don't want to live like this. I don't have to, I don't need to, I just shut down the emotional life.''
