According to the Sydney Morning Herald, popular Bondi Beach were infested with an algae bloom that caused the waters to turn red and sparkle.

Officials say the algae has no known toxic effects, but can irritate the eyes and skin due to high levels of ammonia.

Bondi Beach is a high traffic venue for tourists, and is used frequently as a shooting location. "Scooby-Doo! and the Legend of the Vampire" was filmed in part at Bondi. Australia's reality show, "Bondi Rescue" follows the lifeguards who patrol the beach.
