'Boardwalk Empire' will end with Season 5
The cable channel announced Thursday (Jan. 9) at its TCA press tour session that "Boardwalk Empire's" coming fifth season will be its last one.
The Emmy-winning series will return in its usual fall spot for the final run. Statements in the press release from creator Terence Winter and HBO suggest the decision to end the show was a mutual one.
"We're thrilled to get the go-ahead for a fifth season of 'Boardwalk Empire,'" Winter says. "After much discussion with my creative team and HBO, we've decided to wrap up the series after such a great run and look forward to bringing it to a powerful and exciting conclusion."
Adds HBO Programming president Michael Lombardo, "It has been an incredible honor to bring this powerful and groundbreaking series to our subscribers. Terry Winter has created one for the ages."
"Boardwalk Empire" has 17 Emmys over its first three seasons, including acting honors for Bobby Cannavale in 2013 and Steve Buscemi in 2011 and directing awards for Martin Scorsese (2011) and Tim Van Patten (2012).
