"Bones" likes to surprise its characters and audience with unexpected family members. In "The Heiress on the Hill," however, the show's world may get the biggest surprise of them all: Dr. Jack Hodgins has a brother.

That's big news for any long-term fan of "Bones." It was established very early in the series that Hodgins ( TJ Thyne) was the sole heir and last surviving member of an incredibly wealthy family. An occasional distant cousin was mentioned after that, but the fact that Hodgins had no family was set. It became an integral part of the character.

Well, according to photos and spoilers for "The Heiress on the Hill," this isn't quite correct. Hodgins instead has a long-lost brother. The man somehow appears in the course of investigating a kidnapping -- which turns into a murder -- and it soon becomes clear that this brother has a mental illness of some sort.

The answers will come in "The Heiress on the Hill" episode of "Bones," airing Friday, Jan. 31 at 8 p.m. on FOX.
